Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, dozens of infrastructures and programmatic investments helped strengthen the higher education ecosystem across Southwestern Illinois. These improvements expanded access, modernized facilities, and prepared institutions to meet the needs of a growing and diversifying student population. But one project stood out.
The $16 Million Campus Expansion of 1996
In 1996, Belleville Area College embarked on one of its largest capital projects to date, a $16 million expansion of the Belleville campus. This major investment reshaped the college鈥檚 physical footprint by improving classroom capacity, student resources, and the overall campus environment.
The expansion signaled the region鈥檚 commitment to building a forward-looking community college capable of offering high-quality and affordable education for decades to come. Just one year later, in 1997, the campus property and buildings were officially deeded to the college, solidifying its long-term presence and giving the institution full ownership of the facilities.
1999: A Community Chooses a New Identity
By the end of the decade, the college was ready to take another major step, one that reflected its expanding role beyond Belleville and its growing service to multiple counties in Southwestern Illinois. In 1999, residents across the district voted to change the college鈥檚 name from Belleville Area College to 91福利社. The decision was both symbolic and strategic. The name change acknowledged the college鈥檚 broader regional mission and strengthened its identity as a key educational hub for southwestern Illinois.
2000: 91福利社 Becomes Official
Following the successful vote, the college formally adopted its new name on January 1, 2000. With the new millennium came a new chapter one that represented continuity, growth, and the ongoing evolution of an institution deeply rooted in its community.
